As wife and husband composing partners, Kathryn & Kim make their most inspired music as a team. Both pianists, they bring classical training and sensitivity to every project-- film, television or concert stage. Kim is also a conductor, infusing a visionary approach and a richly fine-tuned knowledge of symphonic color and scope into the couple’s work. As a pianist with a passion for literature, Kathryn brings her gift of melody and an ability to express the essence of a story and its subtexts through music. Together, their most satisfying work is found in projects that challenge them to create fresh worlds of sound in which they always strive to inspire and create surprise.
After composing the music for Martin Scorsese’s passion project, Silence, the Kluges quickly developed a reputation for powerfully evocative and inventive scores. They have also written works for concert performance— writing for musical legends ranging from jazz/classical icon Branford Marsalis to violinist Midori.
Growing up in middle America as a Korean-American, Kim has a special perspective that informs his work with Kathryn— their music derives from their passion and conviction that people of different backgrounds can share the essence of their humanity through artistic expression.
The Kluges work from their Los Angeles studio.

“(A) distant presence of varying, mercurial moods…. it links the spiritual and physical worlds…. The score by the Kluges heightens the subtext of the story, is a bridge between centuries old cultures in conflict, and makes “Silence” a better film.”
—The Wall Street Journal
“The organic score of natural sounds (credited to Kathryn and Kim Allen Kluge) supports the drama exquisitely well.”

“THE COMPOSERS TO WATCH: “Silence’s” husband and wife composers Kathryn and Kim Allen Kluge. …their music (for “Driven”) achieving an epic sense of betrayal…”
— The Best Scores of 2019, Film Music Magazine
“The icing on the cake and the world of “Peel” is the scoring by Kathryn Kluge and Kim Allen Kluge. Simply beautiful. Whimsical and lilting, we feel the innocence of Peel through the score, and are then
transported in time, place, and emotion…”

“One of this season’s biggest Oscar snubs thus far is the disqualification of the ‘Silence’ score by the husband and wife composing team of Kim Allen Kluge and Kathryn Kluge. Their score is daringly musical in the way that it emanates from nature, yet so subtle that it didn’t pass muster with the Academy’s music branch as ‘a substantial body of music’. In other words, the classical composers were penalized for succeeding too well in creating an unconventional, Zen-like score at director Martin Scorsese’s urging…. The minimalist ‘Silence’ score by Kim Allen Kluge and Kathryn Kluge is an inventive achievement.”
